Israel and Hamas start indirect discussions in Egypt on Trump's Palestinian ceasefire initiative.
News Agency
Third-party negotiations focused on achieving a final agreement on a American ceasefire proposal to stop the conflict in Gaza have begun in the Egyptian city of Sharm El-Sheikh.
Palestinian and Egyptian officials have indicated that the meetings are focused on "preparing the environment" for a potential swap that would result in the liberation of all captured Israelis in return for a quantity of incarcerated individuals.
The group stated it consents to the ceasefire initiative partially, but has omitted reference to several crucial requirements - including its military demobilization and governance position in Gaza.
The Israeli leader said on Saturday that he hoped to announce the liberation of hostages "soon"
Conflict Timeline
The discussions, which will involve regional and international officials facilitating discussions with teams from both the conflicting parties separately, take place on the verge of the second anniversary of the armed assault on border communities on the initial attack date, in which about 1,200 people were fatally wounded and 251 others were taken hostage.
The defense forces began military actions in Gaza in retaliation. Following the initial attack, over 67,000 have been fatally injured by armed interventions in Gaza, based on data from the region's local health authorities.
Initiative Components
The comprehensive proposal, which has been agreed upon by American leadership and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, suggests an prompt cessation to combat and the freeing of 48 hostages, only a portion are believed to be living, in return for hundreds of Palestinian prisoners.
The framework requires that once the two parties approve the proposal "complete assistance will be quickly dispatched into the conflict zone"
It also declares that the militant group would have no role in administering the territory, and it allows for an eventual Palestinian state.
Latest Updates
On Friday, Hamas responded to the proposal in a declaration, in which the group approved "to liberate all Israeli prisoners, both surviving and deceased, following the swap arrangement outlined in the American plan" - if the necessary circumstances for the transfers are met.
It failed to address or endorse the detailed initiative but said it "reaffirms its commitment to hand over the administration of the Palestinian territory to a Palestinian body of independents, based on regional unity and Arab and Islamic support"
The announcement omitted reference of one of the key demands of the initiative – that Hamas accept its military demobilization and to ceasing political participation in the administration of Gaza.
Global Perspectives
Local residents described the group's reaction to the negotiation initiative as unexpected, after an extended period of signals that the organization was preparing to reject or at least substantially modify its endorsement of the American initiative.
Instead, Hamas excluded its traditional "red lines" in the formal declaration, a decision many interpret as a evidence of international influence.
European and Middle Eastern representatives have endorsed the initiative. The Palestinian Authority, which controls sections of the disputed regions, has described the American initiatives as "authentic and resolute"
The Islamic Republic - which has been one of Hamas's main sponsors for many years - has also recently indicated its endorsement of the US proposal.
